USA: A Plan B for World Cup 2010?

Tag: US National TeamMax Zeger @ 11:20 am

Sepp Blatter, a.k.a King FIFA, has done it again.  He continues to suggest that South Africa will be replaced by another host if they don’t get their act together.  Sepp himself switched to the continental rotation system in order to have Africa host a World Cup, but he know is making contingency plans in the event that South Africa is not ready to host.  Worries surrounding power outages, transportation, stadium building delays, and security has made Blatter hint about a “Plan B.”  Today, Blatter said he has three nations who could host a World Cup in one years notice, one of them is rumored to be the USA.

South Africa’s chances of keeping the World Cup really hinge on how well the FIFA Confederations Cup goes next summer.  If it doesn’t go well, Blatter could yank the tournament and put it in one of his “Plan B” nations, hopefully the US.  Other nations rumored to be considered are England and Australia.

What do you think about the chances of the USA getting the 2010 World Cup?  I’m going to say it’s low because Blatter really wants to have a World Cup in Africa.  If we do get it, what stadiums do you think we will use?  If Blatter doesn’t pick the US, who will he pick?  You comments below.

I’m thinking the three alternatives are England, Spain, and the US - and I have absolutely no basis for this whatsoever. I wouldn’t be surprised if Spain is at the top of the list based on their performance in the Euro’s - the nation will be riding high. I don’t think the Aussie’s will get it any time soon - they have a lot of large AFL stadiums but I’m not sure how easily those would convert to proper football stadiums (they are cricket ovals).

Spain could be one, I didn’t think about them. I think though, that Blatter will be hesitant to go to Europe unless its England, becasue they had it in 98 and 06. Australia is a long shot i agree, so I think the two most viable options are England and the US. We should play a game of basketball to see who gets it.

Well, Antarctica is out for obvious reasons, Africa might be out, Asia can’t do it because of the olympics, what about South America? Maybe Brazil or another country in South America?
