Maurice Edu Signs With Rangers

Today, another American moves abroad!  Maurice Edu put pen to paper today and signed a five year deal with Scottish giants Rangers.  Edu left Toronto FC for a reported 2.6 million pounds, roughly five million dollars.  Edu is currently with the US National Team in Guatemala, preparing for the USA’s match vs. Guatemala.Edu isn’t in the clear yet.  His move is still pending a Scottish Work Permit, however, Scottish Work Permits are considerably easier to attain than English permits, which will aid Edu’s attempt.

If Edu is granted a permit to play, he could push for a starting job in the midfield.  It won’t be easy however, considering that in the span of seven days, Edu is one of three midfielders that Rangers has singed.  He will have to fight with newly signed Pedro Mendes and Steven Davis for time, not to mention a whole host of other talented midfielders.

I’d say this is a great move for Edu.  Maurice showed in the Olympics that not only does he have the technical ability to play at the highest level, he also has the football intelligence to play and learn multiple positions.  In a bind, Edu could play in the defense as he did in the Olympics.

What are your thoughts on the move?  Is this a good move for Edu?  Will he get his permit?  Is it good that Damarcus Beasley is already at the club?  Will the move help his prospects with the US National Team?  Any thoughts you have on Edu go below.
