Tag: UncategorizedMax Zeger @ 11:20 am

This weekend’s MLS matches were a fantastic display of where the league is going.  This week’s game of the week showed us how soccer is supposed to be played.  New Yorkers packed in to the Meadowlands to see David Beckham, but what they got was an open and fast paced game.  After the jump are the highlights. Gruffgoat’s Winners and Losers of the Week

Tag: Uncategorizedgruffgoat @ 4:30 pm

Yanks Soccer fans, there was quite a bit of US soccer action this week, the Olympic Team was announced, SuperLiga group play was in full swing, USL is still cranking along. So with that, here are my picks for the winners and losers of the week.

Winners: Brian McBride. For coming out of international retirement to put his boots on for the US football team. Apparently all this happened out of some harmless joking around with Lubos Kubik – who then told Olympic team coach Peter Nowak that Brian would play if asked. So thankfully, we have a goal scorer going to Beijing.

Losers: Mainstream Atlanta sports media. For failing to cover any of the big soccer events that took place, including the SuperLiga and the fact that the Atlanta Silverbacks hosted two of the biggest teams in the Western hemisphere: Pachuca CF of Mexico and Club Atletico Independiente of Argentina.

RL Bays is creator of Gruffgoat’s Football Blog . His blog covers world football, commentary, soccer in America, as well as Atlanta-based soccer news.  He is a weekly contributor to Yanks Soccer.

New England Players Subdue Crazy Passenger on Airplane

Tag: UncategorizedMax Zeger @ 8:25 pm

Not only is New England the best team in MLS, they’re also the best crime fighters. On their flight to Los Angeles, a passenger stripped off his clothes and attempted to open the exit door before being tackled by some Revolution players. Here is the more detailed account.

What do you think of the Revolution stopping a revolt of a passenger?  That team is really amazing.

Kansas City vs. Columbus Rewind (Video Style)

Tag: UncategorizedMax Zeger @ 2:17 pm

When Kansas City rolled into Columbus last night, they were expecting to continue their hot streak, but they met a very skilled and dangerous Columbus.  I’ll get right to the video though, keep a lookout for Chad Marshall’s screaming header to the top corner.

Aston Villa is on the transfer lookout and in hot pursuit of Brad Friedel. Villa manager Martin O’neill, hoped to sign Friedel in time for their Intertoto cup match against Odesnse on Saturday but it appears he will not be signed in time.  Villa are in desperate need of a keeper, as their only one on the books is Stuart Taylor.  Brad Guzan is still awaiting a work permit and O’neill will now look to sign Friedel by next week.  Manchester City is also rumored to be on the trail of Friedel with former boss Mark Hughes keen on re-uniting with his keeper from Blackburn. Dominic Cervi on trial at Portsmouth

Tag: UncategorizedMax Zeger @ 2:52 pm

Dominic Cervi, one of the US U-23 goalies is on trial at Portsmouth.  Cervi, who played one game in the US Olympic Qualification process was also on trial at Celtic earlier in the year.  Cervi was drafted with the 12th overall pick in the 2008 MLS Superdraft to Chicago, but decided to test his luck in Europe,  He trialed with Celtic, and reportedly looked good, but was not extended a contract.  He was with the US Men’s National Team for their string of friendlies and qualifiers in May and June, now, he’s on trial with Portsmouth.  Talk about a whirlwind half of a year.  Cervi is a six feet six inch monster, but he did look shaky in his one appearance in the U-23 Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

What do you think of Cervi picking up another trial with a European team?  Do you think he’ll get a contract?  Your thougts below.

Aston Villa Wants Another American Goalie

Tag: UncategorizedMax Zeger @ 7:34 am

Just when you thought Aston Villa had found their goalie for next year, along comes news that Guzan might not be the only American keeper for the Birmingham club.  It appears as if Martin O’neill is pressing on with his plans to not only sign Guzan, but also sign Brad Friedel.  Friedel has been unsettled since Paul Ince came to Blackburn with City and Villa, the two most aggresive suitors.  Friedel is rumored to command a $5 million transfer fee, a fee that is not out of Villa’s reach.  As more news develops, you will be updated.
