Bob Bradley Calls Up 17 for World Cup Qualifier Against Guatemala

Tag: UncategorizedMax Zeger @ 4:31 pm

Bob Bradley has stunned us again failing to call up some players who have made a strong case to be on the US National Team.  Kenny Cooper is lighting up MLS and he doesn’t get the call, it’s just crazy.  Edson Buddle even deserved the call up over Eddie Johnson who might never play a game for Fulham this year.  Anyway, the roster is after the jump.

U.S. ROSTER BY POSITION
GOALKEEPERS (2): Brad Guzan (Aston Villa: 2/2 SO), Tim Howard (Everton FC: 3/2 SO)
DEFENDERS (6): Carlos Bocanegra (Rennes: 13/1), Steve Cherundolo (Hannover 96: 15/0), Jay DeMerit (Watford FC: 1/0), Frankie Hejduk (Columbus Crew: 11/1), Oguchi Onyewu (Standard de Liege: 8/0), Heath Pearce (Hansa Rostock: 2/0)
MIDFIELDERS (5): Michael Bradley (SC Heerenveen: 2/1), Maurice Edu (Toronto FC: 1/0), Sacha Kljestan (Chivas USA: 1/0), Eddie Lewis (Derby County: 19/3), Pablo Mastroeni (Colorado Rapids: 10/0)
FORWARDS (4): Brian Ching (Houston Dynamo: 7/4), Landon Donovan (Los Angeles Galaxy: 21/8), Clint Dempsey (Fulham FC: 8/2), Eddie Johnson (Fulham FC: 8/8)

What do you guys think?  It looks well, normal.  Why don’t we see some new guys?  Happy to see some of our Olympians involved?  Your thoughts below.

I really just don’t get it. You know what Ching and Johnson both bring to the team and it’s not much at all. At least find out what the other strikers in the pool can do at the international level. I also think Bob needs to start moving towards a youth movement. Is Hedjuk and Lewis really competing for a roster spot for the 2010 team? I certainly hope not. After a good Olympics I’d rather see Marvell over Frankie and Holden over Mastro or Lewis.

  2. Blaine says:

Definitely feel Wynne should get called over Hejduk. Hope Demerit gets some play. Eddie Johnson…well I think every fan whinces at that one. Altidore? Adu? both super subs. don’t see any strong subs in this lineup.

  3. Blaine says:

I’m assuming Altidore and Adu are not on there because they are just starting with their new clubs. would like to see them though.

  4. Jonesta says:

I agree Ching and Johnson should be dropped and lets try Kenny Cooper and Altidore though he probably needs to join his new team so lets bring in some other young striker Davies maybe. Also we could try another of our young midfielders a Robbie Rogers or a Holden so we can see what they can do on the senior level.

  5. Jonesta says:

Also I agree Wynne should be there and drop Boca…he makes stupid decisions and gets tangled with Gooch too much this might be both of them but Gooch is a bigger offensive threat so keep him and bring on a smarter guy like oh Parkhurst he is good and we all know it sure he was lax on that one goal against nigeria but come on we were asking alot from the team at that point…other than that he did great in the olympics

I really like Bob Bradley for about the first year of him coaching, now, I’m bewildered. He can’t face the facts that the same lineup he used when he started in 2007 is not the same lineup he should be using now. Wynne had a great olympics, give him a call. Orozco is a good center back regardless of his mistake while playing left back at the olympics, get him into camp. Holden needs a shot. Rogers should get a look. Altidore hasn’t been in a squad since Mexico in february, he also scored in that game. Kenny Cooper has been lighting up MLS and he can’t get a look. Bradley needs to embrace all of the young stars that are ready for a chance.

The only consolation is that this is a preliminary roster. People can be added so hopefully he wises up and gets Cooper, maybe Wynne and Altidore. We need some new forwards because we all know how well Eddie Johnson and Brian Ching can do. We need some new young blood.

That said, I like the fact that he picked Kljestan, he’s got some real talent.

  7. Marlon says:

Bradley’s non-usage of Adu and Altidore continues to bewilder me.

  8. Jonesta says:

I understand his non-use of Altidore and Adu for this they need to get in with their new teams and we aren’t in the most challenging zone (but we can’t take it lightly). I can also see what Max is saying and this isn’t likely to be our actual world cup squad assuming we advance. But, having said that, He better start using the young talent alot of them should be challenging for starting positions and his lack of bringing in Parky is what gets me the most…is it just us meaningless fans that see his worth?

  9. Max Zeger says:

I think it’s because of the seasons starting. But if they could have sacha and michael, then they could have jozy and freddy.

  10. Jonesta says:

Sacha is still on the same team so the logic doesn’t follow there…and is Michael stuck in Holland? what is going on there if he is still at Heerenveen then having him makes since also.

  11. Ryan says:

I think that Eddie Lewis being on this squad is the worst. Granted, he actually has been pretty solid every time we’ve used him of late, but I’d really like to see Robbie Rogers in there. Also, why isn’t DaMarcus Beasley on this list?
As for Adu and Altidore, they’re moving to new clubs, and Villareal probably wasn’t about to let Jozy go for another international, he’s already late coming to the club. Same goes for Adu, I assume. I think Buddle should be on the list, but really, I don’t know that the Galaxy would be happy losing both Donovan and Buddle during a crucial playoff push, and Bob has been adamant about trying to keep a smooth relationship with the clubs. Why no Cooper? I have NO idea.

  12. Chuck says:

Beasley was just added to the roster
