Aston Villa Wants Another American Goalie
Just when you thought Aston Villa had found their goalie for next year, along comes news that Guzan might not be the only American keeper for the Birmingham club. It appears as if Martin O’neill is pressing on with his plans to not only sign Guzan, but also sign Brad Friedel. Friedel has been unsettled since Paul Ince came to Blackburn with City and Villa, the two most aggresive suitors. Friedel is rumored to command a $5 million transfer fee, a fee that is not out of Villa’s reach. As more news develops, you will be updated.
What do yo think of Friedel’s move to Villa? I think it is a good move for Friedel, but an unfortunate one for Guzan. Guzan figured to be the number 1 keeper but now looks like he will be the backup. Your thoughts below.

I guess if he’s going to be anyone’s understudy I’d like it to be Friedel. I’m actually surprised Brad hasn’t gotten more attention from a club like Arsenal.

It’s true, but I don’t think that Guzan wants to be an understudy at this point. He went to Europe to play, not to sit on the bench. Friedel would do well at a club like Arsenal, and, Arsene Wenger has previously stated that he is a big admirer of Friedel. I hope Friedel doesn’t go to Villa because Guzan needs to play.

Believe me, I really want to see him play as well, but how many starting keepers are there in the EPL under the age of 25?

That’s true, but, Guzan had every intention of playing at Villa. I don’t think he knew that O’neill wanted to pick up another Goalie, especially Friedel who would definetely start.

Lol good point Chuck the EPL is about goalies in their prime or a bit past their prime. You have to remember a goalies prime is about 3-40

sorry 35-40

I’m not 100% sure about this, but I bet that Guzan would have stayed in MLS until January and played if he knew that when he went to Europe, he would start. Guzan is not in Europe to back up anybody, he is there to get PT and lots of it. Friedel would definetely start over him and I don’t think that Guzan is happy about that potential transfer.
